Why I Love Photographing Weddings at Hazel Gap Barn
Hazel Gap sits on the historic Welbeck Estate near Edwinstowe in Nottinghamshire. The red-brick buildings, curved watchtowers and enclosed courtyard make it immediately recognisable, but it is the way the venue flows that makes it particularly good for weddings.
You can move from your ceremony into the courtyard for drinks, continue into the Oak Room for dinner and return to the main barn for the evening without spending half the day travelling between different locations.
That gives you more time with your guests and creates plenty of natural moments for me to photograph. People mingle in the courtyard, children explore, drinks appear and someone inevitably begins practising their speech in a quiet corner.
The venue also offers plenty of variety without requiring you to walk miles in wedding shoes. We can create completely different photographs in the barn, on the main drive, beside the courtyard and in the woodland while keeping each portrait session short.
Experience Hazel Gap Barn
Hazel Gap is atmospheric, but the main ceremony barn is not the easiest room to photograph.
The arched doors in the centre allow bright daylight into the room, while the areas at either end of the barn can be much darker. As you walk down the aisle, the light across your face and clothing can change very quickly.
That does not mean you need to worry about it. It simply means your photographer needs to anticipate what is about to happen.
Because I know the space, I can choose my position before the ceremony begins, prepare for the change in light and photograph both your entrance and your partner’s reaction without running around the room like I have suddenly misplaced something important.
Photographing the candlelit ceremony barn
The candles, fairy lights, wooden beams and large fireplace give the ceremony barn its warm atmosphere. I work with that mood rather than trying to turn the room into something bright and clinical.
During the ceremony, I photograph quietly and avoid drawing attention away from you. The glances, nervous smiles, reactions from your families and the moment you finally realise, “Right, we’re actually married,” all matter more than asking you to repeat anything for the camera.
Once the ceremony is over and the room has cleared, there may also be an opportunity for a few relaxed portraits near the fireplace or arched doors.
Photography in the Oak Room
The Oak Room feels completely different. Its large windows bring in more natural light, while the views towards the gardens and woodland help the room feel open and connected to the grounds.
This is where I can photograph the little interactions happening around the tables: guests laughing, children becoming increasingly creative with the table decorations and the reactions during speeches.
The speeches often produce some of the most personal photographs of the day. While everyone is listening to the person holding the microphone, I am also looking for your parents, closest friends and anyone who has just realised they feature heavily in the next embarrassing story.
The Best Places for Wedding Photos at Hazel Gap Barn
You will not need to visit every possible location. I normally choose the best options based on the light, weather, timeline and how much time you want to spend away from your guests.
The front drive and watchtowers
The front approach gives you one of the clearest views of Hazel Gap’s red-brick exterior and distinctive watchtowers. It works well for wider portraits and larger family groups when the weather is dry. Later, the exterior lighting and darker sky create a completely different look.
The ceremony barn and oak doors
The fireplace, brickwork, oak beams and arched doors offer several indoor options. These locations are particularly useful when the weather is unsettled or when you want photographs that capture the venue’s cosy atmosphere.
The courtyard
The courtyard is where much of the post-ceremony action happens. Guests collect drinks, congratulate you and catch up with people they may not have seen for years. That makes it ideal for candid photographs and a handful of quick portraits while guests move into dinner.
The gardens and woodland
Behind the Oak Room, the gardens lead towards trees and woodland. This area gives your photographs a softer, more natural feel than the red-brick buildings and can work especially well later in the day when the light becomes less harsh.
Confetti photographs
The courtyard outside the ceremony barn can be brilliant for confetti because your guests can gather around the doors as you make your exit. A little organisation helps, especially when a few enthusiastic guests are ready to launch everything before you reach the doorway.
Golden-hour and nighttime portraits
If the evening light looks promising, I may suggest stepping outside for another five minutes around sunset. Later, fairy lights and the illuminated brickwork let us create a few dramatic nighttime portraits without keeping you away from the dance floor for long.
Relaxed Couple Photos Without Missing Your Wedding
One of the biggest concerns couples have is being taken away for photographs while everyone else is enjoying the wedding. I completely understand. You have spent months bringing your favourite people together. You should be with them, not standing in a field for an hour while your dinner develops abandonment issues.
Instead of one long portrait session, I normally split your couple photographs into two or three short walks of around five to ten minutes each. The exact plan depends on your timeline, the weather and the available light.

Group Photographs at Hazel Gap Barn
Family group photographs are important, but they work best when they are planned properly.
Before your wedding, I will ask you for a concise list of the combinations you genuinely want. We can then work through them efficiently while your guests are still nearby.
Depending on the weather and light, the courtyard, main drive or rear garden can all work well. The main barn gives us an indoor alternative when it rains.
Keeping the list manageable usually means we can finish the essential family photographs before anyone disappears towards the bar, toilets or another part of the Welbeck Estate.
What Happens if It Rains?
Rain does not ruin your Hazel Gap Barn wedding photography.
The venue has several indoor and sheltered options, including the ceremony barn, oak doors and adjoining rooms. We can use doorways to bring natural light onto you while remaining under cover, or step into the courtyard during one of the breaks that often appears between showers.
Umbrellas can work well for a few outdoor photographs, but you will never be pressured to stand outside becoming steadily wetter for the sake of my portfolio.
Wet ground can also reflect evening lights, and the sky after a shower sometimes gives us more interesting conditions than a completely clear afternoon.
The plan is simple: we adapt, keep an eye on the weather and use the spaces that feel comfortable. Your gallery should still look like your wedding—not an emergency meteorological report.
A Real Hazel Gap Barn Wedding
Jen and Lyle’s wedding is a great example of how the venue works throughout a complete day.
Jen arrived in a white London taxi, while Lyle waited inside wearing a kilt she had not seen before the ceremony. They filled the day with personal details inspired by the cycling journey that led to their engagement, including handmade decorations and tables named after places they had visited.
After the ceremony and speeches, we used the red-brick exterior, watchtowers and surrounding grounds for their portraits. We also stepped outside again after dark for a short nighttime session.
